Theft
Theft is defined under Section 378 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as:
“Whoever, intending to take dishonestly any movable property out of the possession of any person without that person’s consent, moves that property in order to such taking, is said to commit theft.”
Robbery
Robbery is defined under Section 390 of IPC as a graver form of theft:
“When, in order to commit theft or while attempting to commit theft, the offender voluntarily causes or attempts to cause death, hurt, wrongful restraint, or fear of any of these, it constitutes robbery.”
Key Difference
- Theft: Involves taking movable property dishonestly without causing harm or fear.
- Robbery: Escalates when theft involves violence, threat, or inducing fear, making it a more severe offence.
